- Prepare for successful implant placement
- Help keep your jaw healthy and strong
- Avoid bone loss following tooth extraction
If you’re missing a tooth, you’re also missing its root. Without the natural stimulation provided by the root when you chew, you will also lose bone mass over time. Your bone shrinks about 25 percent in the first year after you lose your tooth. This not only affects your appearance, it also weakens your jaw. Socket grafts in Fort Collins keep your jaw strong.Doctor Mark Kollar on socket grafts Read Transcript
Doctor Mark Kollar on socket grafts
When teeth are removed, the bone will tend to shrink, left to itself. And depending on if there's a desire to restore an area later in the future, material can be placed in the area where the tooth came out, and that will serve as a scaffolding for bone to grow so that the bone doesn't shrink on both sides, as well as up and down. It will maintain its original position, compared to where it would've been had you not done anything with it. So it really is an insurance policy, or an option for the future, if someone wants to later on down the road take a step and place an implant in the area where the tooth was lost, there will be plenty of bone there in order to make that restoration. So at the time of surgery, you can place that and maintain that bone better than it would've been maintained had that not been done at the time of surgery. And we offer that, and if people choose to be a part of that, we can very easily, comfortably do that for them.
This simple procedure will:
- Maintain the natural contours of your jaw for a younger appearance
- Prepare you for successful placement of dental implants
- Speed healing after a tooth extraction by encouraging clotting
- Help prevent a painful dry socket
- Avoid the need for a bone graft before receiving implants
To keep your bone healthy after you lose a tooth, ask us about a socket graft procedure. Call 970-972-9787 for more information. For best results, we can perform it right after an extraction.
Socket Grafting Is a Simple Procedure
The socket grafting procedure is fast and painless. Dr. Mark Kollar will clean your socket following an extraction, then place grafting material into the extraction site to encourage new bone growth. The final step is sealing it with a membrane to protect it and keep it in place. It takes only a few minutes!
Your mouth will already be numb, as you’re given local anesthesia prior to a tooth extraction. You’re also given the option of receiving one of two kinds of safe dental sedation: laughing gas or an oral sedative.
Proper Care Will Ensure a Successful Socket Graft
To help keep grafting material in place, we recommend the following:
- Don’t spit or rinse your mouth out for two days.
- Do not smoke.
- Avoid touching the extraction site, with your tongue or your fingers.
