The continuing care visits are a little bit different than the initial visits. At the time that we have people return, we wanna look at anything that may be outstanding to bring someone to the peak of the pyramid in dental wellness. So, we review that. And every visit we're observing the patient’s face. We're looking for signs of cancer that can happen because of sun exposure, certainly in the Rocky Mountains. We do that subtly. We're also looking inside for oral cancer. We may not call it out, but we're always looking for oral cancer, every time we're inside the mouth. The bite issues, if there are teeth that have spaces between the gums and the root, we're looking at the bite, because the bite can loosen the teeth and make them susceptible to gum disease that they wouldn't otherwise have.
So, we're doing that. We're also listening and looking at how the joint works, opening and closing. Is it deviating to one side? Is it nice and smooth? Does it lock? We're looking at that at the same time. Then we're checking the hard tissue, which is the teeth, or are the teeth. The teeth get checked. Then we're looking at all five surfaces, with X-rays or not with X-rays. Sometimes with light, we can transilluminate the tooth and see decay shining through the teeth with a high enough power light, in areas that might need at least some attention. We have an intraoral camera, we take pictures and we can show the people the pictures, the intraoral photos, as well as the digital X-rays and explain what they're looking at. Which, most of dentistry is intuitive, you don't need a degree to do it. So, then we go through and we check the gums. We use an instrument to measure around the teeth and see if there's any bleeding.
Bleeding is an ulcer, an ulcer is infection. Infection is disease. So, we're especially tuned into that. And seeing if they have maintained an area of attachment of the tooth to the bone within a cleaning range. Or if some areas are getting out of control. As gum disease is like heart disease, you can't feel it. The fluid around the neck of the tooth tries to pump out the bacteria, and even if the bone has been lost significantly, the pain is never felt unless you measure it, 'cause it's a draining abscess. So, we're very much aware of what's happening with the gums, because what happens under the gums will affect general health in very subtle ways, drawing down your immune system. So, it's important we identify that, look at that. So, as well as the hard tissue, we're looking at the soft tissue. We're trying to move people to a place where they don't need continuous care. Where they're restored and they're healthy and they're managing things on their own.

Having studied it from a number of different consultants, we've come up with strategies that are very subtle that we can pass on to patients that allow them to more effectively treat themselves at home, this requiring less time professionally on our part, so we very carefully measure and record where the trouble areas, if they are present, are at and then work with people to identify that and then give them assignments that are very easy to do and doesn't require special dexterity.
While at the same time, during the continuing care visit, we use high-tech instruments to disinfect the mouth with high-frequency scalers that cause bubbles to implode and kill bacteria, but not the tissue; also to use a disinfectant irrigation in our water system to disinfect the mouth at the same time that we're doing that with high-frequency energy.
We're doing those things at the same time that we're working with two people in a room instead of one, so we're very efficient at that, and that keeps people in the chair less time, not more. By using high-tech instrumentation and methods and coaching people, there's far less time involved, not just in the length between appointments, but also the appointment itself can be very short and most effective without creating side effects that can happen with any treatment.
Less is generally better up to a point, and that's what we try to do, is to let people live their lives and do that with an elegant, high-tech, high-touch solution using that people resources that moves along treatment for people so they can be more comfortable.
Preventive dental care saves you time and money. It’s far easier to prevent problems or treat them in their earliest stages than it is to eliminate them in later stages. One of your best defenses against problems is regular dental cleanings and exams.
During your appointment, we use technology like digital X-rays and intraoral cameras to find problems before they become serious. We don’t just save our technology for complex procedures; we use it in every aspect of your treatment. Dr. Kollar was one of the first dentists in Colorado to use laser cavity detectors.
In addition to cleanings and exams, you may also need to preserve your dental health with:
- Gum Disease Treatment – Regular exams help us identify gum disease in its earliest stages so we can eliminate it with thorough gum disease treatment. We use an ultrasonic scaler so your treatment is quick, comfortable, and effective.
- Dry Mouth Treatment – Dry mouth isn’t just uncomfortable, it can threaten your dental health. Dr. Kollar can help you eliminate this condition and its unpleasant symptoms, like halitosis (bad breath).
